But now there is! You can join a gaggle (group) here in Corvallis, or form one in your area. The Raging Grannies began in Victoria, B.C. in 1987, protesting nuclear ships in the Victoria harbor. Now they've grown into an international movement with over 60 gaggles in many Canadian and US cities, as well as a few in Europe. The Corvallis group formed in September 2006, and in the first two months had already sung at more than a dozen informal events. Dressing like harmless little old ladies in silly, extravagant hats, with aprons or shawls, the Raging Grannies sing satirical songs, which they have created by giving new words to old popular tunes. These Grannies have high ideals—to promote global peace, justice, and social and economic equality. But it is their down-to-earth, humorous methods that give them their power and charm. Words to familiar tunes are shared freely on the Granny web sites, or members write their own words. One doesn't have to be a grandmother to join or be able to carry a tune. It’s all about the spirit of working for justice and peace and having fun while helping create a better world.
